FAQ Why&HowThere's basically two recurring questions that, almost without exception, pop up in any conversation about 2012 - NEW HORIZONS. Project initiator Bruno van den Elshout answers them below:
Why photograph the horizon 8 785 times?"Apart from why not?, there's three paths that led me to NEW HORIZONS:1 The horizon unites extremes and breathes harmony and wholeness: a perfect antidote to the hectic reality that we will remember the year 2012 for; 2 The horizon symbolises home to me. The Hague, where I was born and where I still live today. A city that is unique in Europe thanks to its proximity to the sea, with only a stretch of dunes separating the city from nearby and ever-present infinity, abundance, space and freedom; 3 The horizon is a simple graphic representation of two surfaces that interact and together create an incredible diversity of colours, structures, textures and clarities. Altogether, I have grown fascinated by how the horizon invites its observers to see beyond obstacles and barriers. Into infinity, where the only limits are those of our own imagination." |
How to go about making such a large project actually happen?
"Three types of ingredients: 1 A wicked combination of craziness, vision and hope - preferrably shared; 2 Technological skills: photographic, mechanic and electronic; 3 Resources: friends, funds, time and energy. Oh, and patience, despair, anger, confidence, wonder - all shared with an amazing group of people who have contributed to the materialisation of this plan. They are listed on the righthand side of this page. |

Dutch photo magazine FOCUS dedicated an article to the technical set-up of our pet/machine/installation in June of 2012. We are currently working on a guide that details how we built our machine and installed everything that made it work. This article will be published on DIYPhotography.net shortly." |
BONUS QUESTION: What's next?

Keywords: partly crowd-funded, commercially viable, inspired on our exhibition, square format 24x33cm, 240 pages full colour, print run 2 012 copies, public sales price € 84.95.
